Haven listen to an audio interview of BBC Hausa called ‘ADIKON ZAMANI’ anchored by one Fatima Zara Umar that is now all over and moving round the social network especially Whatsapp where two females drug addicts in kano state, Nigeria were interviewed on how they were started, when they started, who initiated them, how they are living with it, who is given them the drugs and why they are abusing drugs and other substances, and lot more interesting questions and their individual responses given were seriously scaring to me as youth and young parent.
In their response, some of the reasons given were not far fetched from reasons given in America, China, Ghana, Jamaica, Columbia, Cameroon, kaduna, Lagos, Enugu, Zamfara, Kachia, Zaria, Kajuru, Kafanchan etc which made them to abuse drugs. It is the same all over.
Some of these reasons are simply universal because every country and community share their own side of the unfortunate story and are as follows;
There are two primary causes of drug abuse among youths. These are
1. Peer pressure: Youth associates with different types of people or friends. Through the pressure from these friends, a child may end up having a taste of these drugs and once these is done, they continue to take it and become addicted in the long run. And majority of drug addicts are initiated into the bad system by their peer group.
2. Depression: Another primary causes of drug abuse is depression. When certain things happen to someone that is considered very sad disheartening the person started thinking of the best way to become happy once more hence, the use of hard drugs will come in or may be suggested by their peer as the only way to restore happiness. This later on turns to a habit, hence drug abuse. Another major cause of drug abuse is said to be the rate of unemployment among youths.
Furthermore, drugs can be said to be abused when people don’t keep to the prescribe dosage and continuous use of a particular drug for a long time without doctor’s approval. This type of abuse is associated with soft drugs like pain killers when one assumed that he is tired then enter into a neighborhood medicine store and buy paracetamol for himself (self medication). The reason given by one of the Lady addict in kano interview was love, and her heart was broken by her boyfriend and hence indulged in drug abuse.
All the point i am trying to raise here is this, those who are mysteriously involved in this subject matter are female children, and are the most delicate give of nature of our society considering their natural role in moulding and shaping the entire humanity, because, the child first contact with the global arena is his family institution and the mother is the first life teacher he would meet. I want to go with the saying “If you educate a woman you educate a nation” yes it is true that educated woman impact a lot to the education and upbringing of her young and innocent children. There is also a saying of the prophet Muhammad PBUH which says “if you are to marry a wife, choose a responsible mother for your children”.
Drug abuse of both female and male gender is a serious and injurious menace that is bedevilling our communities and therefore, destroying societies and should be rejected with all sense of seriousness and commitment. No sane society can fold it arms and allow it future generation perish in a path of substance misuse. Nigerians are a cultural and religious driven people, and there are certain acts that are termed abomination culturally particularly when women gender are involved, this acts is one, and our traditions and religion condemned it and should be treated as such because it is a tragedy of gigantic proportion.
The effects of drug abuse according to Nigerianfinder.com a an online publication,
“Alcohol is a substance that has been taken by man since many centuries ago in order to get special bodily sensation and it is deeply embedded in a diverse cultures of the world. Many Nigerians do not regard alcohol as a very potent drug due to the fact that it is readily available and is socially accepted by the society. Alcohol is in the composition of many beverages and varies greatly in their nature and strength. Some have from 3-20% while some others contain up to %50 alcohol. When this alcohol is taken in excess” the following effect could be experienced in the body:
1.It deadens the nervous system
2. It increases the heartbeat
3. It causes the blood vessel to dilate
4. It causes bad digestion notably of vitamin B
5. It interferes with the power of judgement and poison the higher brain and nerve center.
Apart frоm alcohol and tobacco, оthеr ѕubѕtаnсеѕ with several арреllаtіоnѕ whісh are sources оf grеаt concern tо the gоvеrnmеnt аrе the nаrсоtісѕ. Thеѕе аrе thе hаrd drugѕ аnd are thе mоѕt dаngеrоuѕ. Thе sedatives аrе nісоtіnе, tranquilizer barbiturates etc. Sedatives reduce tension, аnxіеtу and inhibitions resulting іn a fееlіng оf rеlаxаtіоn аnd drоwѕіnеѕѕ. Othеr aspects оf drug abuse еffесtѕ are;
1- Social аѕресt: It causes conflict such as religious or ethnoreligious crisis, arm banditry (Yan shara/daukan amarya), cultism and terrorism etc.
2- Fіnаnсіаl aspect: Majority don’t participate in any positive form of wealth creation, self development and reliance through skills and non skills acquisition hence, contributing small or nothing to the economic growth of their community.
3- Hеаlth аѕресt: They become mentally imbalance and sometimes madness may set in, they are prone to be infected with various transmissible diseases like HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis A,B,C,D.
Solution to this problems are “simpledifficult”.
-It is simple when actions taken are proactive, parents has the responsibility of assuming their full parental obligations such as provision of good and qualitative education to their children and wards.
-Instill fear of God in their children through religion knowledge and pray for God’s guidance.
-Culprits must be arrested no matter how placed they are.
-Government must punish those who are involved in buying and Hawking drugs of abuse according to the provision of our laws to serve as lessons to others
-Government should increase manpower in Nigeria drugs and law enforcement agency NDLEA and other security agencies for proper execution and implementation of their mandate.
It is difficult when all the above mentioned are ignored therefore, it is on this note, I want to categorically state that, “Youth and our society are half naked today until something serious is done to restore, protect and maintain our glory for development of our people.
May God save Nigeria and her youths as the leaders of tomorrow.
