One of the nominees to the reconstituted board of the Independent
Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, who was
dropped by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Maimuna Aliyu, has explained reasons why she is being persecuted.
Aliyu, a former executive director at Aso Savings and Loans, was
dropped because she was being investigated for allegedly stealing and
diverting public funds and that charges were being drawn up against
her by the ICPC before the appointment.
Also, the ICPC moved to seize two of her properties on the grounds that
the said properties are under investigation..
She was asked by the Acting chairman of ICPC, Abdullahi Bako not to
part with, deal in or otherwise dispose of such property or any part
thereof in respect of the aforesaid immovable property until the order is revoked or varied.
On her part, Aliyu, in a letter through her lawyers, Chuks Okonkwo and
associates to the ICPC, said the commission may have been misguided in reaching the erroneous conclusion to evoke the provisions of section 45 of the ICPC act.
She alluded to the fact that when one is being investigated, such a
person is entitled to a right of fair hearing, a right enshrined in
the 1999 constitution as amended.
Aliyu explained that she was neither invited to state her own side of
the story in the mortgage transaction with her former employers nor
was she proven to have committed any offence within the labyrinth and
contemplation of the ICPC act to warrant the action of the commission.
She said “for the avoidance of doubt, the truth and facts relating to
the assets you purport to seize, are clearly contained in a letter
written to the director, other financial institutions, supervision
department, Central Bank of Nigeria dated August 14,2017 by Aso
Savings and Loans.
“The incontrovertible fact is that Aso Saving and loans are in
flagrant violation of the provisions of both banks and other financial
institutions act ( BOFIA) and the Central Bank of Nigeria ( CBN act)
through their recklessness in loans and administration.
“Their board and management of the said institution, granted unsecured
loans to friends, family and politically exposed persons, a practice
our client protested about as the officer in charge of marketing at
the time. Her stance of course was adjudged as insubordination so she
was marked for destruction.”
“We are aware that our client had petitioned your Commission on the
corrupt practices of the board and management of her former employers but we find it curious that rather than investigate these gross and naked acts of corruption, the commission elected to become a debt recovery agent for the mortgage bank.”
“In the final analysis, we opine that it is unfortunate as it is not
worthy of accolade that the ICPC should be reduced to an errand
Commission to do the will and wish of some unscrupulous persons within the commission working for their pay masters who are trying to cover their well established corrupt practices,” she stated .
