Tor Tiv V, Ochivrigh Professor James Ortese Ayatse took oath of
After his installation, the Tor Tiv urged the Federal Government to
empower agrarian economy.
Prominent politicians, traditional rulers and other very important
persons from all facets of life graced the occasion. The event took
place at the popular JS Tarka stadium in Gboko.
His Royal Majesty Ayatse is the immediate past pioneer Vice Chancellor
of the Federal University, Dutsinma in Katsina state and a former Vice
Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi.
He emerged Tor Tiv in December, 2016 one year after the demise of the
Late Tor Tiv IV, HRM Alfred Akawe Torkula, who reigned and ruled the
Tiv nation like a Czar, before he finally joined his ancestors.
Presenting the staff of office to the Tor Tiv, Benue state governor,
Mr Samuel Ortom Ortom charged the Tiv paramount ruler to distance
himself from partisan politics and appealed to him to evolve measures
that will reposition the Tiv nation and foster unity, peace and
Ortom described HRM Ayatse as a virtue of selflessness, forthrightness
and non-partisan ruler who he said has the willingness to work with
the collective good of the Tiv nation, Benue state and country. He
appealed to him to reform the traditional institution in the state.
The governor however, assured that his administration will continue to
support and collaboration with the traditional institution to improve
the lives of the people and advocated ranching as lasting solution to
the incessant clashes between herdsmen and farmers in the state and

unto the path of hardwork, unity, honesty, Godliness and progress
which we were known for in the past,” Ortom stated.
In his acceptance speech, the Tor Tiv, HRM Ayatse assured that he will
rule the Tiv nation with the fear of God and uphold the customs,
values and norms of the ethnic group to impact unity and development.
According to him, the Tiv people were being marginalized in the
affairs of the country and noted that there was need for sons and
daughters of the nation not to live in acrimony. He urged the federal
government to involve the Tiv people in massive empowerment scheme.
The paramount ruler further stated that he will take a bold step in
addressing the perennial Fulani herdsmen attacks on farmers to allow
the agrarian people return to their farm lands.
“As I ascend the throne, I will accept these demands and pledge my
commitment to pursue these virtues with the support of the Tiv Area
Council. I will not play partisan politics. I will uphold the
traditions, customs and values of the Tiv nation that are not inimical
to the progress and development of the Tiv people,” he stated.
The Acting President, Yemi Osibanjo who was represented by the
minister of agriculture, Audu Ogbe pledged the commitment of the
federal government to look into the agricultural needs and other
challenges facing Tiv nation and Benue state.

Tiv people were key to food security in the country. He said enhancing
the development of the people is necessary and very imperative and
assured the paramount ruler of the National Assembly’s support to
ensure that the citizens live in unity.
The chairman of Nigerian Governors Forum and Zamfara state Governor,
Abdullaziz Yari said there was urgent need to make all things work in
