National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control
(NAFDAC) in Nasarawa and Benue states have jointly destroyed expired
drugs, food, cosmetics, and expired drinks worth N105 million.
Mrs Yetunde Oni, acting director general (DG) of NAFDAC made the
disclosure on Friday at the venue of the joint destruction exercise in
Lafia, the Nasarawa state capital.
Oni, represented by Alhaji Abubakar Jimoh, director of special duties
of the agency said the periodic destruction exercise was one of
NAFDAC’s strategies to prevent circulation of fake, counterfeit
medicines and unwholesome products in the country.
She said that some of the products earmarked for destruction were
voluntarily submitted to NAFDAC by various governmental and
non-governmental organizations whilst others were mopped up from open
market through enforcement activities and surveillance systems.
“For us in NAFDAC, zero tolerance is what we are aiming for. A lot of
damage is been done by counterfeit drugs. A drug counterfeiter is
worse than an armed robber. That is why we are pushing for a life
sentence for drug counterfeiters at the National Assembly,” She said. ELANZANEWS.
