The long arms of the law yesterday caught up with a 29-years-old man,
Kenechukwu Okonkwo as Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye of the Lagos State High
Court in Ikeja convicted and sentenced him to a 14-years imprisonment
for raping a 29-years-old Virgin, Faith Godwin.
Justice Ipaye while delivering judgment in the case held that rape is
an act of an extreme violence against women and society must have zero
tolerance to the act against the honourable members of the society.
The judge also held that the prosecution has proven its case beyond
reasonable doubt and that she had no difficulty in convicting the
defendant of the one count of rape brought against him by the Lagos
The court held, “I find you Kenechukwu Okonkwo guilty of rape contrary
to Section 258(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.”
Before the sentence was pronounced on the convict, his counsel, Worer
Oduagbaka, had in his allocutus, pleaded with the court to temper
justice with mercy.
He said, “The convict is a first time offender and the only son of the
family, he lost his mother last year to Cervical Cancer.”
“He has been in custody since 2013, during this period he has learnt
his lessons, I will urged the court to pass a light judgment on him
