Following series of boat mishaps in Kebbi State which claimed over 100 lives in one month in Yauri local government area of Kebbi State, the Kebbi State government has ban the use of boat and canoe in the night
The Chairman of Kebbi State Emergency Management Agency
(SEMA), Alhaji Sani Dododo, made this known to newsmen in Birnin Kebbi yesterday.
Dododo said that the unfortunate incidents of boat mishaps in the state within a span of one months which claimed many lives has prompted the state government to take proactive measures to guard against future occurrence of boat accidents in the state.
According to him the measures put in place included banning all
boat and canoe operators from transporting people after 6 pm in the night, all passengers must wear life jackets before embarking on a trip, all boats/canoes must have passenger manifest containing important details of passengers such as their names , where they come from and their next of kin.
Other measures he outlined included separation of passengers with their loads, passengers must travel in a separate boat/canoe while a separate boat /canoe use for their luggage. “In order to avoid over load we have also categorised the boats /canoes into category A , B and C with the number each will carry written boldly on the boat or canoe.
The Chairman added that in order to enforce the measures, the
state government will set up a task force comprising security
agencies, inland water ways officials , traditional leaders and local government officials to implement the new measures .
”We will also conduct awareness training to boat and canoe
operators with stakeholders to orient them on water transportation and
the new laws ”, he said.
