How Iris Priest was a Principal in Niger school for 50 yrs – Govt, old student


An Iris Priest Rev Father Jeremiah Dermont Connel has been declared the longest serving Principal in any Nigeria school after serving at the Former Government Secondary School, now Father connel College Minna for 50 years.

At a grand finale of a reception organized by the old students of the school for the over 80 years old Iris priest who was retiring to his home country ; Ire-land, the President of the old boys Mr Godwin Ashituabe noted that for the best of their Knowledge no Principal has stayed in a school for 50 years.

He recalled with Nostalgia the commitment of the Iris priest who spent 50 years of his 55 years in Nigeria at the college instilling in them high moral education with discipline that has distinguished the products of the school,

Ashituabe stated that the Rev Father was always keeping them busy and taught in the classes most times including Islamic Religious Knowledge that could be considered a no go area for a catholic priest, adding that the father was a committed teacher and superlative school principal who has breaking a record of being a principal for 50 years.

Also speaking an old student of the school and the chairman of the organizing committee Malam Mohammed Datti Usman said that “he taught all his classes in addition to his 15 hour daily schedule as he minded the school in the last 50 years. For Fr all classes must be taught and where a teacher is unavailable Fr will attend to those classes ensuring that students are not left idle. In some instances Fr taught Islamic Religious Knowledge IRK”

The Deputy Governor of Niger state Ahmad Mohammad Ketso lauded the effort of the Rev Fr to the educational development of Niger state and therefore urged the old students to sustain the legacy Rev Father Connel.

Also speaking Minister of state Mines and solid Minerals Hon Abu Bawa Bwari described him as a man of honour who contributed a lot to the development of mankind and education.ELANZANEWS.M
