HIV: Option B+, Test And Start Now Officially Adopted In Nigeria

In a bid to improve on the care and treatment of the People Living
With HIV (PLWHIVs), the federal government has adopted the Option B+
including the Test and Start methods.

Speaking to journalists at the event of the launch and dissemination
of the national guidelines for HIV prevention treatment and care in
Abuja, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Institute of Human Virology
Nigeria, Dr Patrick Dakum, noted that the newly officially adopted
methods have been tested and proven better by the World Health
Organisation (WHO).

He further explained that while the Option B+ will ensure that
pregnant women who have tested positive to HIV are placed on treatment
for a lifetime, the Test and Start ensure that anyone found to have
tested positive would commence treatment immediately.
Dakum also added that the Test and Start method has been proven to
help reduce the risk of complications for the patient in the course of
therapy. “WHO has adopted it and advised countries to do the same,
Nigeria has now adopted the Test and Start strategy for persons living
with HIV”, he said. ELANZANEWS.M
