10 tricycle operators granted N400,000 bail each over clash with soldiers

An Umuahia Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday granted N400,000 bail to each of the 10 tricycle operators, docked over the Sept.4 clash with soldiers in Umuahia.

The defendants are: Maduka Okoro, 42; Kelechi Okoro, 29; Onyekachi Ezera, 38; David Eke, 34; Udochukwu Omekara , 34 and Chinedu Ogbonna, 25.

Others are: Chukwudi Mmesoronye, 24; Okwudiri Nwagwu, 41; Ihedigbo Monday, 45, and Sunday Eze, 25.
All the defendants pleaded not guilty to charges of assault, causing damage to property, taking part in a riotous act and resisting arrest.

The Magistrate, Mrs Linda Ugbaja, ordered each of the defendants to provide one surety in like sum and adjourned the case until Sept. 18.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Samson Onyemuche, had told the court that the defendants committed the offences on Sept. 4 in Umuahia.

Onyemuche said that the defendants in an attempt to resist arrest, unlawfully wounded Lance Cpl. Anyogu, Private Eze Kenneth, and Sgt. Adewumi Aderemi of the 14 Battalion, Nigerian Army, Ohafia.

He said that the offences contravened Sections 516A, 517A, 71, 451 and 332 Cap 8, Vol 3, Criminal Law of Abia State, 2005. (NAN).M
